World's End is a protected nature reservation located in Massachusetts which includes rolling hills, extensive wetlands and dramatic views of the Weir River, Hingham Harbor, and the Boston skyline in the distance. Originally destined to be a sprawling residential development (planned and designed in 1889 by Fredrick Law Olmstead), World's End was instead purchased and protected as a nature preserve.
As one of the only structures to be permitted within this natural setting, the Nature Observatory is intended to provide visitors with a unique vantage point from which to view and experience the reservation's pristine setting and wildlife. Given it's unique setting, the Observatory was intentionally designed to have minimal visual impact on its immediate surroundings and therefore is built utilizing simple forms and naturally-weathering materials.
